About markdowneditor

A free, privacy-first Markdown editor that treats your documents as yours alone.

Why it exists

Most online Markdown editors either upload your text to a server, require an account, or fall apart on large documents. markdowneditor was built to prove a browser app can be fast, feature-complete and private at the same time.

Local-first by design

Everything runs in your browser. Documents are stored in IndexedDB on your device and can sync to real files through the File System Access API. The app works offline, and optional usage analytics are strictly opt-in: nothing loads until you allow it, and Global Privacy Control is always honored.

Open development

The project is developed in the open with automated testing, security audits and reproducible Docker builds. Issues and feedback shape the roadmap.

Developer

markdowneditor is built and maintained by Ed Nguyen. If you find it useful, the Buy Me a Coffee link inside the app keeps hosting and development going.

Frequently asked questions

Is markdowneditor really free?

Yes. The editor is free to use with no account, no trial and no feature gate. Optional support through Buy Me a Coffee keeps the project sustainable.

Where are my documents stored?

In your browser's IndexedDB storage on your device. You can additionally sync documents to real files with the File System Access API. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

Does it work offline?

Yes. markdowneditor is an installable PWA. After the first load, editing, preview, math rendering and diagram rendering all work without a network connection.

Can it handle large Markdown files?

Yes. The preview is segmented so only the block you edit is re-rendered, and off-screen sections skip layout work. Documents of 100 KB and thousands of lines stay responsive.

Does it support LaTeX math and diagrams?

Yes. KaTeX renders inline and display math, Mermaid and Graphviz render diagrams, Vega-Lite renders charts, and Shiki highlights code blocks in over 100 languages.

Do you track me?

No documents are ever transmitted. Optional anonymous usage analytics run only if you explicitly allow them in the consent banner, and Global Privacy Control suppresses them entirely.
