उपयोग कैसे करें: Use it for each idea worth keeping in a slip-box. Write the title as a claim and the body in your own words before adding links. Main pitfall: saving a note without at least one reasoned link to an existing note.

[202610211432] [Title stated as a claim, for example: Spaced retrieval beats rereading for long-term memory]

A permanent note for a Zettelkasten (slip-box): one idea, written in your own words, with a unique ID and explicit links to other notes. Based on the note-taking method associated with sociologist Niklas Luhmann. Replace every [bracketed] value.

Note

[Example: Actively recalling information strengthens memory more than reviewing it again. Each retrieval attempt, especially when it is effortful and spaced out over days, makes later recall more likely. Rereading feels productive because the material looks familiar, but familiarity is not the same as being able to produce the answer. This matters for anything I want to keep for years: I should test myself instead of rereading highlights.]

How the Zettelkasten works

The method uses three kinds of note:

Note typePurposeLifetime
Fleeting noteQuick capture of a thought, anywhereProcessed within a day or two, then discarded
Literature noteWhat a source says, briefly, in your words, with page numbersKept with the reference
Permanent noteOne idea of your own, written to stand alone and linked into the systemKept for good

Linking practice:

  1. When you write a permanent note, search for related notes and link to them with a reason.
  2. Prefer links over folders. A note can belong to many lines of thought; it lives in one place.
  3. Add the note to a map of content (index note) when it starts a new cluster.
  4. Use the unique ID in links so titles can change without breaking anything.
  5. Review links when you revisit a note; add new connections as your thinking grows.
