TOGAF Architecture Contract Template

Parties, scope, frozen baseline, contracted requirements, deliverables, acceptance criteria, checkpoints, dispensations, metrics, variations, RACI, signatures

АрхітектураПовнийTOGAF Standard, 10th Edition (2025 release with Technical Corrigendum 1): Phase G, Architecture Contractcontract

Як використовувати: Use it when a work package or supplier starts delivery and must commit to the approved architecture. Fill the parties, scope and frozen baseline first, then the contracted requirements and the checkpoints. The main pitfall is a contract that refers to current standards instead of fixed versions, so the baseline changes under the delivery party.

Architecture Contract: [Work package or project name]

Architecture Contract between the architecture function and one delivery party (an internal team or a supplier) for one work package or project, issued at the start of Phase G (Implementation Governance) of the Architecture Development Method in The TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition (2025 release with Technical Corrigendum 1). It names the parties, the scope and the approved architecture the delivery must follow, the requirements and standards that apply, the deliverables and evidence the party provides, the conformance and acceptance criteria, the checkpoints, what may be dispensed with and how, the metrics, change and escalation, duration and signatures. Replace every [bracketed] value and every row marked Example. This is a documentation format, not legal advice.

3.2 Out of scope

Example: changes to the policy systems beyond their export interfaces; the handler workspace (WP-04); retirement of the legacy CRM, which is a separate work package with its own contract; reporting and analytics on customer data.

[Item][Standard / Building block][Version][Note]

5.4 Areas left to the delivery party

State what the party may decide alone, so governance does not creep into design choices the architecture deliberately leaves open. Example: internal module structure, programming language within the adopt ring, test framework, user interface layout within the design system, and the choice of matching algorithm, provided ARS-DAT-03 is met. Record such decisions as decision records (architecture/adr-full) and share them at the next checkpoint.

6. Deliverables and evidence

[DEL-nn][Deliverable][Content][Rn][Format or template]

The architecture function returns comments on each deliverable within [5] working days of receipt. Silence after that period does not count as acceptance.

7. Conformance and acceptance criteria

7.1 Conformance rule

Conformance is assessed at each checkpoint with the Architecture Compliance Assessment, using its per-check rating scale (conformant, conformant with conditions, partially conformant, non-conformant, not evidenced, not applicable) and its roll-up rules. The board outcome follows the board charter: compliant, compliant with conditions, dispensation or non-compliant.

7.2 Acceptance criteria at closure

IDCriterionEvidence
ACC-01 (Example)Every critical requirement in section 5.1 is rated conformantPre-production and post-implementation assessments
ACC-02 (Example)Every non-critical requirement is conformant or covered by a closed conditionCondition log
ACC-03 (Example)No dispensation is active, or each active one has an owner, expiry and funded exit planDispensation register
ACC-04 (Example)As-built models are in the repository and match productionRepository check against deployment records
ACC-05 (Example)Architecture debt incurred is recorded in the tech debt register with an ownerarchitecture/tech-debt-register
[ACC-nn][Criterion][Evidence]

7.3 Consequences of non-conformance

Example: A non-compliant outcome at R2 stops build of the affected scope items until a reworked design is assessed. A non-compliant outcome at R3 prevents go-live. For a supplier, the consequences in the statement of work apply (section 14). Neither party may treat a missed checkpoint as an implied pass.

8. Checkpoints and review schedule

R2 Design (Example)End of design, before build (2027-04-12; decided under ARB-2027-007)DEL-01 to DEL-05Full board1

[Rn][When][DEL-nn][Who][Tier]

Ad hoc reviews may be called by either party when a material change (section 11) or a serious incident affects the architecture.

9. Dispensations and permitted deviations

9.2 Who may grant what

Non-critical requirement, no security or personal data impactBoard chair alone, on the contract architect's recommendation, reported to the boardUp to [6] months
Critical requirement, any security or personal data impact, or a term over 6 monthsFull Architecture Board; the security member must agree where security risk rises, and the data protection officer is consulted where personal data is affectedUp to [12] months, per the charter
Second renewal of any dispensationExecutive, on the board's recommendationPer the charter

10. Quality and fitness metrics

MET-05 (Example)Customer API availability against SLOAt least 99.9% per monthMonitoringMonthlyARS-TEC-03
[MET-nn][Measure][Target][Source][Frequency][ARS ID]

Where possible, implement these as automated checks in the delivery pipeline (architecture/fitness-functions) so conformance is visible between checkpoints.

11. Change control and escalation

11.1 Clarifications

Either party may ask for a clarification of a baseline item. The contract architect answers within [3] working days and records the answer in the clarification log; a clarification that changes a requirement is a variation instead.

Clarification IDQuestionAnswerDate
CLR-01 (Example)Does ARS-APP-01 cover internal batch reconciliation jobs?Yes, if they read hub data from outside the hub's own runtimeYYYY-MM-DD
[CLR-nn][Question][Answer]YYYY-MM-DD

11.2 Variations

A variation changes the scope, baseline version, requirements, checkpoints or term. The requesting party raises an architecture change request (architecture/architecture-change-request); the board assesses the impact and either approves a variation to this contract or directs a new architecture cycle when the change is larger than this work package. For a supplier, the commercial change procedure in the statement of work runs in parallel (project/change-control).

Variation IDChangeReasonApproved byDateContract version
VAR-01 (Example)Interim CRM batch export permitted under DSP-2027-02CRM has no API and is retired only in WP-07Architecture Board (ARB-2027-007)2027-04-191.1
VAR-02 (Example)ARS-INT-04 added for the interim policy system A feed; baseline moved to ARS 1.1Change request ACR-2027-03Architecture Board (ARB-2027-011)2027-06-071.2

11.3 Escalation

LevelWhoTriggerTime limit
1Contract architect and delivery leadDisagreement on a rating, finding or clarification[5] working days
2Architecture BoardLevel 1 unresolved, or a request to overturn an outcomeNext board meeting
3SponsorBoard cannot decide, or business impact above [threshold][10] working days

Escalation follows the board charter. Work continues during escalation unless the dispute concerns a critical requirement, in which case the affected scope item pauses until level 2 decides.

15. Duration, termination and closure

ItemRule
StartExample: On signature by all parties in section 16
Normal endExample: When the board confirms ACC-01 to ACC-05 at checkpoint R4
Early terminationExample: Work package cancelled by the portfolio board; delivery party replaced; the board decides a new architecture cycle supersedes this scope
Obligations that surviveExample: Active dispensations and their exit plans transfer to the service owner; recorded debt remains in the register
Closure recordBoard outcome record ID, date, and links to the final assessment and post-implementation review (project/post-implementation-review)

After closure, the operating service is reviewed through the periodic architecture health check (architecture/architecture-health-check).
