Architecture Roadmap and Transition Architectures Template (TOGAF E, F)

Consolidated gaps, work packages, Transition Architectures, dependencies, value and risk per increment, migration plan, costs, Phase G hand-off

Як використовувати: Use it once the Architecture Definition Document is approved to sequence the change into work packages and stable plateaus. Fill the consolidated gaps and work packages first, then define each Transition Architecture by the state it reaches, not by a date. The main pitfall is front-loading all enabling work so that no increment delivers visible value for a year.

Architecture Roadmap and Transition Architectures: [Architecture engagement name]

Architecture Roadmap, Transition Architectures and Implementation and Migration Plan for one engagement, the outputs of Phases E (Opportunities and Solutions) and F (Migration Planning) of the Architecture Development Method in The TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition (2025 Update). It consolidates the gaps, groups them into work packages, defines the plateaus between baseline and target, analyses dependencies, value and risk per increment, estimates resources and cost, and hands the plan to Phase G. Replace every [bracketed] value and every row marked Example.

1. Introduction

1.1 Purpose

This document turns the gaps between baseline and target architecture into an ordered set of work packages, grouped into Transition Architectures that each deliver measurable value. It is the basis for portfolio funding, for Architecture Contracts with delivery teams and for measuring progress toward the target.

5. Transition Architectures

5.1 Plateau overview

Example: three plateaus over 24 months. Each arrow is crossed only when the exit criteria in section 8 are met and the Architecture Board has completed its compliance review for that state.

5.2 Transition Architecture definitions

Carry these into the programme RAID log (project/raid-log).

10. Resource and cost estimates

10.1 Cost per increment

IncrementWork packagesCost (kUSD)
TA-1 (Example)WP-01 (260), WP-02 (420)680
TA-2 (Example)WP-03 (520), WP-04 (300), WP-06 (80)900
Target (Example)WP-05 (460), WP-07 (60)520
Total2,100

10.2 Contingency, effort and payback

Example assumptions: contingency of 15%, labour at 60% of base cost, blended rate of 0.8 kUSD per person-day, and annual benefits of 830 kUSD once the target is reached (section 7).

Cbase=∑i=17CWPi=680+900+520=2100 kUSDC_{\text{base}} = \sum_{i=1}^{7} C_{\text{WP}_i} = 680 + 900 + 520 = 2100 \text{ kUSD}
Ctotal=Cbase×(1+0.15)=2100×1.15=2415 kUSDC_{\text{total}} = C_{\text{base}} \times (1 + 0.15) = 2100 \times 1.15 = 2415 \text{ kUSD}
E=0.60×Cbase0.8=12600.8=1575 person-daysE = \frac{0.60 \times C_{\text{base}}}{0.8} = \frac{1260}{0.8} = 1575 \text{ person-days}
Tpayback=CtotalBannual=2415830≈2.9 yearsT_{\text{payback}} = \frac{C_{\text{total}}}{B_{\text{annual}}} = \frac{2415}{830} \approx 2.9 \text{ years}

The total of USD 2,415 thousand stays within the capital cap of USD 2.5 million (constraint CNS-01). The simple payback ignores benefits realised before the target state; a full discounted analysis belongs in the business case (business/business-case) or the TCO analysis (architecture/tco-analysis).

11. Governance hand-off to Phase G

11.1 Architecture Contracts to issue

Contract IDWork packageDelivery partyKey architecture requirementsReview points
AC-01 (Example)WP-01Platform teamARS-TEC-01, ARS-DAT-02Design, pre-production
AC-02 (Example)WP-02Data hub vendor and data teamARS-DAT-01, ARS-INT-01Design, pre-production, TA-1
AC-03 (Example)WP-03Claims package vendorARS-BUS-01, ARS-APP-01Design, pre-production, TA-2
[AC-nn][WP-nn][Party][ARS IDs][Points]

Contracts and compliance reviews follow the Architecture Board charter (architecture/architecture-governance-charter). Delivery teams submit designs with the architecture review request (architecture/architecture-review-request).

11.2 Roadmap change control

Change typeDecided byRecord
Date change within an increment, no change to Transition ArchitectureProgramme managerProgramme log
Work package scope or cost change above [10%]Architecture Board and sponsorChange request and new roadmap version
Change to a Transition Architecture or the targetArchitecture BoardChange request; Phase H assessment
New gap or requirementLead architect, then BoardRequirements impact assessment

11.3 Monitoring after hand-off

[Describe how progress toward each Transition Architecture is reported to the board: KPI dashboard, quarterly roadmap review, and fitness functions where they can be automated (architecture/fitness-functions).] Track architecture debt accepted during delivery in the tech debt register (architecture/tech-debt-register).
