CMDB Data Model Template (ISO/IEC 20000-1)

CMDB model: scope, CI classes and attributes, relationship types, ER diagram, naming, sources, reconciliation, statuses, data quality audit

运营标准ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 + Amd 1:2024 (cl. 8.2.6); ISO/IEC 27001:2022 A.8.9cmdbdatamodeldiagram

使用方法: Use it before buying or restructuring a CMDB, and review it yearly. Fill scope and the class table first, naming one authoritative source per attribute. The main pitfall is recording everything discovery finds, so that the records that matter are lost and nobody trusts the data.

CMDB Data Model: [Organisation or service management system name]

Data model for a configuration management database (CMDB): scope and level of detail, configuration item (CI) classes, mandatory attributes, relationship types, naming and ID rules, data sources and reconciliation, data owners, CI lifecycle statuses, and the audit and data quality checks that keep the records trustworthy. Structure aligned with ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 with Amendment 1:2024 (the current edition as of October 2026), clause 8.2.6 configuration management, with links to clause 8.2.5 asset management and clause 8.5.1 change management. Replace every [bracketed] value and every row marked Example.

1. Scope and level of detail

ItemDecision (Example)
Services in scopeEvery service in the service catalogue
EnvironmentsProduction and disaster recovery; staging only for CIs shared with production
Lowest level recordedApplication deployment, host or managed cloud resource, database instance, network device; not individual containers or pods
End-user devicesRecorded in the asset register, linked to the CMDB only for shared store devices
Short-lived resourcesRecorded by their template or deployment, not each instance
RetentionRetired CIs kept for [3] years for audit and incident history

2. CI classes and mandatory attributes

2.1 Common attributes (every class)

AttributeDescriptionAuthoritative source (Example)
CI IDUnique, never reused, format CI-<CLASS>-NNNNCMDB (generated)
NameHuman-readable name following the naming rule in section 4Owning team
ClassOne of the classes in 2.2CMDB
StatusLifecycle status from section 6Change records
Owner (technical)Team responsible for the CIOwning team
Data ownerPerson accountable for this record's accuracyConfiguration manager assigns
EnvironmentProduction, disaster recovery, stagingDiscovery
CriticalityTier 1 to tier 3, inherited from the highest-tier service it supportsService catalogue
Last verifiedDate discovery or a human last confirmed the recordDiscovery or audit

2.2 Classes

Class codeClassExamplesClass-specific mandatory attributesData owner role
SVCBusiness or technical serviceOnline checkout (catalogue ID SVC-CHK, recorded as a CI with its own CI ID)Service owner, SLA reference, tierService owner
APPApplication or deploymentcheckout-api (CI-APP-0201)Repository, version, runtime, deployment methodProduct engineering lead
DBDatabase instanceorders-db-primary (CI-DB-0012)Engine and version, backup policy reference, data classificationDatabase lead
HSTHost or virtual machine[name]Operating system and version, patch groupInfrastructure lead
CLDManaged cloud resource[name]Provider, account, region, resource typeCloud platform lead
NETNetwork device or component[name]Model, firmware version, management addressNetwork lead
SWPSoftware product (licensed or open source)Database engine 16Vendor, version, end-of-support date, licenceAsset manager
CRTCertificate or secret reference[name]Expiry date, issuer, renewal method (never the secret itself)Security lead
SUPSupplier servicePayment authorisationSupplier, contract reference, support contactSupplier manager

3. Relationships

RelationshipFrom classTo classMeaningUsed by

The diagram shows the main relationship types for the Corvid Commerce example; cloud resources and network devices follow the same pattern as hosts.

4. Naming and ID rules

RuleExample (Example)
CI ID is generated, never edited and never reusedCI-DB-0012
Name pattern: <service>-<component>-<role> in lower case with hyphensorders-db-primary
Environment is an attribute, not part of the name, except where the tool requires itEnvironment = Production
Software product name includes vendor product name and major versionDatabase engine 16
Renamed CIs keep their ID; the old name is kept as an aliasAlias: orders-pg-main

5. Data sources, reconciliation and ownership

SourceFeedsFrequency (Example)Conflict rule
Cloud provider inventory APICLD, HST attributes, runs onHourlyWins for technical attributes
Infrastructure as code stateCLD, APP deployment attributesOn every applyWins for intended configuration; drift raises a task
Deployment pipelineAPP version, member ofOn every deploymentWins for version
Network discoveryNET, connects toDailyWins for presence; owner confirms new devices
Asset and licence registerSWP vendor, licence, end-of-support dateWeeklyWins for commercial attributes
Human input through change recordsOwner, data owner, criticality, depends onOn each changeWins for ownership and business attributes

Data owners confirm their CIs every [quarter]. A CI not verified for [90] days is flagged "Unverified" in impact analysis.

6. CI lifecycle statuses

StatusMeaningSet by

MaintenanceTemporarily out of service for planned workChange record
RetiringReplacement in progress, no new dependencies allowedChange record

7. Audit and data quality

IDCheckMeasureTarget (Example)Frequency
CMDB-Q01CompletenessTier 1 CIs with every mandatory attribute filled / tier 1 CIs98%Monthly
CMDB-Q02AccuracySampled CIs matching the live environment / CIs sampled95%Quarterly audit of [30] CIs
CMDB-Q03FreshnessCIs verified in the last 90 days / Live CIs95%Monthly
CMDB-Q04OrphansLive CIs with no relationship to a service0 for tier 1Monthly
CMDB-Q05Change linkageImplemented changes with at least one CI / implemented changes100%Monthly
CMDB-Q06Unauthorised CIsCIs found by discovery with no change recordEach investigatedWeekly

Audit procedure (Example): the configuration manager selects a random sample stratified by class, a second person compares each record with the live system, and differences are logged as correction tasks with the data owner. Incident records that show wrong CMDB data (ops/incident-management-procedure, section 11) are added to the audit findings.
