PESTLE Analysis Template

Political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors with dated evidence, impact x likelihood scores, priorities, monitoring

BusinessStandardpestleanalysis

How to use: Use it when you need to scan the external environment for one decision, market and time horizon. Fill the decision and scoring scale first, then add only factors with a dated, named source. The main pitfall is listing undated trends nobody can check or update.

PESTLE Analysis: [Subject]

A scan of the external, macro-environment factors that could affect one decision: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental. Every factor carries evidence, a dated source, an impact and likelihood score and a response, so the scan feeds strategy instead of becoming a list. PESTLE is common practice; it extends the environmental scanning categories usually traced to Francis J. Aguilar, Scanning the Business Environment (1967). Replace every [bracketed] value and every row marked Example. Legal and policy rows are a documentation format, not legal advice.

  • Macro-environment: factors outside the organisation's control that affect a whole market.
  • Score: impact multiplied by likelihood, from 1 to 25.
  • Evidence cut-off date: the latest date of the sources used.

Standard and licence note

Based on common strategic analysis practice. The PEST and PESTLE categories are widely attributed to the environmental scanning taxonomy in Francis J. Aguilar, Scanning the Business Environment (Macmillan, 1967); later authors reordered and extended the letters. The European Accessibility Act reference (Directive (EU) 2019/882, applying from 28 June 2025) is a dated example only; check the current consolidated text on EUR-Lex and take qualified advice. This is not legal advice. The section text, scoring scale and fictional Tamberlin Cycles example are original. Template licence: MIT.
